Autoquip's
New Take
On
Productivity
Autoquip developed its line of material handling equipment as the industry evolved. As modern manufacturing and distribution systems and procedures got more sophisticated, they also became more standardized. Just as conveyor systems and machine tools standardized to work better with other equipment, so did their material handling requirements.
These dramatic productivity breakthroughs also standardized the material handling industry to the point that it commoditized standard lift equipment to the degree that many domestic manufacturers now import their own product designs. But the cost of this shift to commodity products is high, in that these manufacturers cannot economically customize their offerings for special applications.

Autoquip, however, has seen its future by looking back at its past, back to the time when modern manufacturing concepts were just beginning, and the majority of Autoquip's business was custom or special order products that had to be engineered and manufactured to satisfy a specific need. While Autoquip never stopped taking on custom projects, it, like everyone else in the industry, was
more focused on volume sales of standard lift tables and other basic material handling products.
While many companies have sacrificed product flexibility for volume sales, Autoquip's broad product line and experience has manifested into one of the company's biggest advantages. Autoquip can deliver a maximum return-on-investment by matching the various technology platforms of its standard product lines to create a cost-effective solution for a specific application.
According to General Manager Joe Robillard, "Autoquip not only provides totally custom solutions, it can also provide affordable customized solutions based on its broad standard lines of high quality lifting and material handling equipment." Autoquip will adapt any of its standard products with custom modifications to provide custom product productivity gains, at a fraction of the cost of a totally custom solution.

For example, a Fortune 500 company recently needed an end-of-conveyor lift and turn combination lift that could handle 4,000 pound loads, but had a minimum height requirement of 8-1/2 inches, including a gravity conveyor. Autoquip successfully created
a solution by adapting its XLT Low Profile lift with a turntable that could accommodate a gravity conveyor with an air brake, and an air limit switch for the turntable.
This required re-engineering the leg sets to spread them apart enough to accommodate the turntable and its safety and control equipment. In the end, the customer got a low profile, high capacity solution that was significantly less expensive than designing a custom product from scratch.
So while Autoquip continues to offer its highly competitive and dependable lines of standard lifting equipment and Freightlift vertical reciprocating conveyors, it has rekindled its passion for the type of custom solutions that built the company. Autoquip is uniquely positioned
to provide high-productivity material handling solutions with its dependable line of standard products, affordable modified standard product capabilities, and totally custom material
handling solutions. Autoquip has become the source for high-productivity material handling solutions.

Fred Hill and Son Adds MHEDA to Web Site
Fred Hill and Son Company (Philadelphia, PA) President Ken Shaw III incorporated a section about MHEDA into his company's Web site in an effort to promote both MHEDA and the benefits of
hiring a MHEDA-member company. Shaw had already included the MHEDA logo on his Web site and decided that adding more information could be beneficial. "Why not give visitors a little more information and try to explain
why there is an advantage working with a MHEDA distributor?" Shaw says. "I believe there is value for the end-user in working with a distributor that is a member of the association. Being an association member shows the level of interest a company has in their field." While Shaw is using MHEDA to
promote his business, he also feels the business is promoting MHEDA. He says, "One of the Board's missions is to promote the relevance of our industry and to raise awareness." MHEDA encourages all members to promote the value of their membership by displaying the MHEDA logo proudly on their Web site and other printed material.
MHEDA Gateway Now Wide Open
Earlier this year, MHEDA launched its Gateway program. The purpose of the program is to build a bridge between students looking for a career in material handling and employers seeking bright young minds. It involves an online database where students
can post resumes specifically for MHEDA members to view. Over the last 4 months, more than 90 job-seekers have posted their resumes to the database. Learn more about Gateway here.
