Breaking News

FDA Electronic Registration/Listing Update

GAWDA and CGA medical gas representatives met with the FDA on Friday, December 4, 2009. The FDA was firm in the requirement to conduct the electronic registration. However, the FDA shared their interpretation of "Annual Renewal." This definition is somewhat different from what we had assumed."Annual Renewal" means anytime in the calendar year before December 31 of that year. Therefore, the FDA considers your renewal to be current if you register before the end of the year (December 31, 2009, for 2009 or December 31, 2010, for 2010). This has important implications for most GAWDA members who registered via paper in the first half of 2009. If you registered by paper in early 2009, there is no rush to register electronically. In most cases, you are registered until December 31, 2010. Read GAWDA FDA Consultant Tom Badstubner’s report on this meeting.

GAWDA Health Insurance Survey
Healthcare is an issue that affects all GAWDA members. How does your company compare with other GAWDA members in the healthcare benefits you provide? Answer our brief survey and we'll report the results in the next issue of Welding & Gases Today.

IRS Sets New Standard Mileage Rates

The Internal Revenue Service issued the 2010 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes. Beginning on January 1, 2010, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:

  • 50 cents per mile for business miles driven
  • 16.5 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes
  • 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations.
The new rates for business, medical and moving purposes are slightly lower than last year’s. The mileage rates for 2010 reflect generally lower transportation costs compared to a year ago. To view the full story, visit this page.

Call to Action on Healthcare Reform

The National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors (NAW), is encouraging members to oppose the proposed healthcare bill, which was in the Senate at press time. Jade C. West, NAW's senior vice president-government relations, provides a legislative update. Read it here.

Please call or fax your Senators now on this issue.

Industrial Production Rose In November

U.S. industrial output rose in November as the manufacturing sector extended a recovery that economists hope will help turn around the ailing labor market. Production climbed 0.8%, the Federal Reserve said on December 15, well above forecasts for a 0.5% gain. The strides were powered in part by the automotive sector, and came despite a sharp drop in utility output. Capacity utilization, the amount of the nation's industrial capacity being put to use, rose to 71.3% in November from a revised 70.6% in October, its highest level since last December but still well below the long-range average.
