BREAKING NEWS

Election Coverage 2008

As November 4 approaches, GAWDA members are paying close attention to the presidential race between Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama as both compete for votes. Considering the state of the economy, it's more important than ever for everyone to stay informed of where the candidates stand on issues affecting our businesses.

John McCain Barack Obama
  Taxes
McCain wants to keep the top tax rate at 35%, cut the corporate tax rate from 35% to 25% and phase out the Alternative Minimum Tax. He would also cut the capital gains tax from 15% to 7.5% for 2 years and provide first-year deductions or “expensing” for equipment and technology investments.
Obama wants to eliminate capital gains taxes on start-ups and small business, and create a tax credit of 6.2% on up to $8,100 of earnings for the self-employed. He also wants to end tax breaks for companies that move jobs overseas and provide temporary tax credits to companies that hire new employees in the next 2 years.
  Health Care
McCain wants to provide $5,000 for health insurance to all American families and $2,500 to individuals, and remove tax exemptions for employees covered through the workplace.
Obama looks to expand the existing employer and government-based insurance system and would require all employers to either offer health benefits to employees or contribute to the cost of a new public program.
  Flexible Work Schedules
McCain co-sponsored the Family Friendly Workplace Act, which calls for employers to provide flexible work schedule options.
Obama supports flexible work schedules and would provide assistance for any companies needing help creating them.

Don’t forget to vote on November 4, and encourage your employees to vote too! Click here for information from the National Federation of Independent Business on allowing employees to take time off when necessary.

Stimulus Tax Breaks Set to Expire

The clock is ticking on the tax breaks doled out as part of the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008. Some suggest that now is not the best time for businesses to make purchases, but these tax breaks could save businesses a significant amount of money. Some of the available tax breaks include a write-off of up to $250,000 on any equipment purchased this year, more than twice the previous amount. To read a more detailed explanation of these tax breaks and how to take advantage of them, visit here.

Profit Improvement Report for GAWDA: Focusing on the Big Two by Dr. Albert D. Bates One of the more interesting aspects of management is the degree to which extremely small changes in key areas of the business result in large changes in overall profitability. In fact, the differences between the very top firms in GAWDA's annual Profit Report and the lower-profit firms is a matter of doing just a little better on a few critical factors. The difficulty in driving the "philosophy of small changes" throughout the business is that there are lots of different areas where such changes are possible. In reality, though, there are only two fundamental issues that management needs to address from a financial perspective: expense leveraging and gross margin management.
