A Gold Mine In
Your Own Backyard

I remember walking around the facilities with Jack Butler, the owner of Butler Gas Products Company in Pittsburgh, PA, looking for gas cylinders that were held hostage by retest delays, branch overstocking or being buried somewhere out of view. This cylinder hunting experience, together with the growing cost of new assets, provided the underpinnings for launching TrackAbout's cylinder tracking and management service in 2000. Today Butler Gas uses TrackAbout as its automated way to easily find and effectively manage packaged gas cylinders.

"There are times you need to purchase new cylinders, but more often than not, you can find underutilized assets right under your nose."
Jack Butler, President
Butler Gas Products Company

It is estimated there is 30-40 percent waste in the packaged gas distribution system. At least half of that waste is a result of the mismanagement of gas cylinders, which cost about twice as much as they did just a few years ago. That is why S.J. Smith in Davenport, IA, is focusing efforts on managing the replenishment of its dock stock at its 12 locations. TrackAbout is building reporting methods that make it easy to establish re-order points for branch locations. It takes the guesswork out of the replenishment process and gives every branch a level playing field for success.

"It's not just the number of unnecessary cylinders you have at your branch locations, it’s the extra carrying cost of having too much gas inventory. There is a gold mine out there."
Rich Smith, Chairman & CEO
S.J. Smith

Let TrackAbout help you eliminate waste in gas distribution operations:
  • Know your total cylinder inventory today and compare it to previous periods. Is your fleet expanding or contracting and why? The same thing applies to specific gas services.

  • Investigate how long your customers hold onto your cylinders. Faster turnaround times decrease the number of new assets purchased and also increase the opportunity cost of cylinders being deployed.

  • Through TrackAbout's Follow-On Tracking™ let your customers see the number of stale assets at their locations. Develop turnaround incentives based on optimizing the number of days cylinders are on site.

  • Find stranded cylinders at supplier, re-testing and re-seller locations. These supply chain partners can become a trap for your cylinder assets. Connect to them with TrackAbout's extended tracking services and take back ownership and use of your cylinders.

  • With TrackAbout's Maintenance Tracking Module look at the number of cylinders and kinds of services that require valve repairs, contamination abatement, etc. Identify trends that can help you decrease the amount of downtime for your cylinders.

  • Review the number of cylinder sizes you have for every gas cylinder offering. Let TrackAbout help you identify underutilized service offering sizes. Then streamline your service offerings and decrease your overall inventory while maintaining service levels to your customers.

BREAKING NEWS

Presidential Term Coming to an End

Gary Stoneback

As GAWDA President Gary Stoneback prepares to hand over the reigns of leadership to Britt Lovin at the annual convention, he reflected on the past year with GAWDA Edge’s Amy Kulow. At 38, Stoneback was the youngest President ever elected to lead the association.

At his inauguration in September 2007, President Stoneback announced that his theme for the year would be "teamwork," a goal that was accomplished with great achievement. Throughout the year, more members become involved in the governing process of the association, including the executive committee, board members and committee chairs. Says Stoneback, "I think that one of the board of directors' great accomplishments of the past year, as a team, is that we've taken a business approach to running the association. We've taken a hard look at our expenses and I think that that's going to pay very great dividends down the road."

Stoneback points to his inauguration at last year's Convention as a high point of his career. "It was exciting to be able to share that moment with my family and with the many GAWDA members in attendance," he reflects. "But the year as a whole was also very exciting, and it’s gone by in the blink in of an eye." If he could do anything differently, Stoneback says he would like to have accomplished everything the board set out to do, but, he acknowledges, "Sometimes the decision-making process didn't go as quickly as I'd have liked it to go."

On Monday, September 22, President Stoneback will present his "State of the Association" address to attendees at the Annual Convention in which he will detail the highs and lows of the past year, and how the association plans to move forward.

We thank him for his leadership and skills shared so well throughout this past year.

Change in Administration of GAWDA’s Medical
Gas SOP Program

For the past six months, GAWDA's Audit Committee has been conducting a thorough evaluation of the needs of our members for consulting services in relation to FDA/medical gases and GAWDA's Medical Gas SOP Program. The Committee reviewed the results of a detailed membership survey, held discussions with the consultants and requested proposals from current and potential consultants. The review was conducted with a strict adherence to best business practices.

On August 28, the Board of Directors approved a motion to contract with AsteRisk, LLC and Thomas Badstubner to provide GAWDA members with a comprehensive FDA medical gas technical support program and to administer GAWDA's Medical Gas SOP Program. The new program is an improvement on the existing program and expands coverage beyond oxygen to include "all medical gases, drugs and devices." More information about the new program and the transition from the existing program will be made available at the Annual Convention and in direct communications to members. Tom can be reached at 1-800-432-5038 or Tom.Badstubner@AsteRisk-Inc.com.

GAWDA's contract with B&R Compliance, Bob Yeoman and Ron Ball will conclude on September 30. Since the Medical Gas SOP Program is wholly owned by GAWDA, administration of the program will be transferred to AsteRisk on that date.

Updated Bridge Welding Standard

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Welding Society (AWS) recently updated an American National Standard on bridge welding, revising the 2002 edition. AASHTO/AWS D1.5M/D1.5: 2008, Bridge Welding Code, published in partnership with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), covers best practices and general provisions of routine bridge welding requirements for AASHTO welded bridges made from carbon and low-alloy constructional steels. It also provides specifications for inspection, qualification, structural details, stud welding, welded joint details and workmanship. Other revisions include additions and updates to usage, handling, and storage requirements for consumables, performance test specifications, filler metal variables, inspection personnel qualifications and high-performance steel grades. The revisions meet demands for a single document that provides cost-effective bridge fabrication approaches and addresses structural integrity and public safety concerns.

Board Members Conclude Term

GAWDA would like to thank the Board members whose terms expire this fall for their dedication and service: Second Past President Avery "Whip" Seaman, Jr. of Corp Brothers, Eastern Zone Vice President Bryan Keen of Keen Compressed Gas, Southeastern Zone Director Sam Thompson of Airgas–Northern California and Nevada, Central Zone Vice President Craig A. Wood of O. E. Meyer, Western Zone Vice President Glenn W. Bliss of General Distributing, Supplier Member Vice President Joseph H. Dillhoff III of OKI Bering, Insurance Trustees Chair Charles Miesch of Purity Cylinder Gases and Industry Partnering Chair Mark Blakely of Valley National Gases. They have served well and the effects of their work are seen throughout the association. Thank you!
